Old Forester has dropped the latest entry in its 117 Series — Triple Char, a 57.5% ABV Kentucky Straight Bourbon aged in barrels charred three times longer than standard. It's the first expression made entirely from whiskey distilled at their Main Street facility in Louisville.
What's Different Here
The extended charring process is the headline. More char means more aggressive wood interaction — deeper caramelisation, heavier oak influence. Tasting notes lean into baked apple, cinnamon, pepper and charred oak. At that proof, it should carry some weight.
Previous 117 Series entries have included 1910 Extra Extra Old and High Angels' Share. The series has earned a decent reputation among bourbon drinkers for genuine experimentation rather than gimmickry.
Australian Availability
Here's the reality check. This is currently available at the distillery and select Kentucky retailers only, priced at US$64.99. Old Forester's standard range has patchy distribution in Australia as it is. Their limited releases? Almost nonexistent here.
For Australian bourbon drinkers, this is one to file under "needy, interesting and unlikely." If you're travelling through Kentucky, different story.
