Scotland's worm tub distilleries, one cask at a time
Wormtub bottles single casks from the handful of distilleries that still condense their spirit through worm tubs, the copper coils in vats of cold water that give a heavier, more robust spirit. Each one is bottled at natural strength.
The whisky
Springbank is one of the great names in Scotch. The Campbeltown distillery still malts its own barley on traditional floor maltings and still runs a worm tub condenser, two traditions very few distilleries keep.
This thirty year old spent its whole life in a single oloroso sherry hogshead and was bottled at its natural strength: full bodied, layered with campfire smoke, cherry compote and the earthy old oak only long ageing brings. A collector's bottle from one of the most sought-after distilleries in Scotland.
Tasting notes
- NoseCitrus, dried fruit and oak, with sea air, autumn leaves and a herbal lift.
- PalateFull and mouth-coating. Ripe fruit, marmalade and cherry compote.
- BeneathSmouldering campfire smoke and a savoury, soy-like depth.
