This is one of the most famous bourbons in the world.
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year is aged for two decades in new American oak — far longer than most bourbons — yet somehow avoids becoming overly woody, delivering a profile that’s rich, layered and remarkably balanced.
It’s part of the Van Winkle line produced at Buffalo Trace, using a wheated mash bill, which softens the profile and adds a smoother, rounder character compared to traditional rye-heavy bourbons.
On the nose, it opens incredibly rich. Butterscotch, dark fruit, vanilla and oak sit alongside chocolate and dried fruit notes.
The palate is where it earns its reputation. Caramel, cherry, spice and leather roll through with layers of chocolate, tobacco and oak, all balanced by a subtle citrus lift.
