We could wax lyrical about the Jack Daniel's distillery for days; such is the sheer depth and legacy of one of the world's most iconic whiskey brands. But for this piece, we'll focus on the essentials: a snapshot of Jack's history, a brief look at the production process, and a guided journey through our upcoming Jack Daniel's virtual tasting on 28 January 2026.
Welcome to Lynchburg Tennessee (Population: Small, Whiskey: Massive)
Lynchburg, Tennessee is one of those places that feels frozen in time, in the best possible way. It's home to fewer people than many football stadiums, yet it produces one of the most recognisable whiskeys on the planet. Welcome to the Jack Daniel's Distillery, officially established in 1866 and proudly holding the title of America's oldest registered distillery.
Founded by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel (who, fun fact, was barely taller than a whisky barrel), the distillery sits in a dry county, meaning you still can't legally buy alcohol in Lynchburg. Yes, Jack Daniel's is made in a town where you can't order a whiskey at the bar, where you can only buy a selection of Jack Daniel's whiskey and branded merchandise from the onsite 'White Rabbit' bottle shop, located at the Jack Daniel's Distillery Visitor Centre. Now that's irony, aged to perfection!
But beyond the mythology and black labels lies something whiskey lovers genuinely admire: history, process discipline, consistency, and a fiercely protected production method that defines Tennessee whiskey.
The Boy, the Preacher, and the Master Distiller
Jack Daniel, born Jasper Newton Daniel in the mid-1800s, grew up with humble beginnings. As a boy in Tennessee, his life took a turn when he found work on the farm of Dan Call, a local preacher, grocer, and part-time distiller who owned a small whiskey operation. It was here that Jack's interest in making whiskey truly began.
But the real twist in this classic origin story is who taught Jack how to distil. For generations, the lore was that Dan Call showed the young Jack the ropes, but deeper research and renewed historical recognition have revealed a richer truth: it was Nathan "Nearest" Green, an African-American distiller working on Call's property, who taught Jack the craft of whiskey making.
Nearest Green - The Unsung Distiller
Nearest Green was an enslaved man and highly skilled distiller with mastery over what we now call the Lincoln County Process, (more about that later).
Call once introduced Green to the young Jack by saying something along the lines of "Uncle Nearest is the best whiskey maker I know." Under Green's guidance, Jack learned the art and science of distilling, and after emancipation following the Civil War, Nearest Green became the first official master distiller of the Jack Daniel's Distillery and continued to work with the brand.
Why This Story Matters
Understanding this layered history makes a simple glass of Tennessee whiskey so much more meaningful. It's a story of innovation, mentorship across racial divides in a difficult era, and the evolution of one of America's most beloved spirits.
What Makes Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey?
Jack Daniel's isn't bourbon, at least, not officially. While it meets all the legal requirements of bourbon, it takes one extra, non-negotiable step: the Lincoln County Process.
Before a single drop sees a barrel, Jack Daniel's new make spirit is slowly filtered, drop by drop, through 3 metres (approx.10 feet) of sugar maple charcoal. This charcoal is made on site by burning maple wood harvested from the surrounding hills. The result? A spirit that's softer, rounder, and unmistakably Jack.
An age-old process that thrives today, charcoal filtering is the signature method used to create Tennessee whiskey
The Core Production Pillars
- Mash Bill: Corn, rye, and malted barley (exact ratios closely guarded)
- Water: Iron-free cave spring water at a constant 13°C
- Distillation: Copper column stills
- Charcoal Mellowing: Sugar maple charcoal filtration
- Maturation: New, charred American oak barrels made in-house
Your Virtual Tasting Line-Up (In Order)
During our upcoming online Jack Daniel's virtual tasting, we'll guide you through the evolution of the house style, from bonded classics to full-throttle barrel strength expressions, finishing with a cultural icon, with some of the line-up expertly paired with beers from Batch Brewing Co.
1. Jack Daniel's Bonded Tennessee Whiskey – 50%
This release follows the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897, meaning:
- Distilled in one season
- At one distillery
- Aged at least four years
- Bottled at exactly 100 proof (50%)
Its charcoal mellowed, matured in select barrel houses, and built for structure and depth. Expect classic Jack notes - caramel, vanilla, and toasted oak with extra muscle and spice thanks to the higher proof. This is Jack Daniel's flexing its historical credentials with modern confidence.
2. Jack Daniel's Bonded Rye Tennessee Whiskey – 50%
This will be sampled side-by-side with the bonded Tennessee whiskey. It's her bolder cousin with a rye-forward mash bill, that still undergoes the Lincoln County Process, softening rye's sharper edges. Expect cracked pepper, baking spice, dark honey, and toasted grain, all delivered with bonded authority.
3. Jack Daniel's 1915 Gold Medal Tennessee Whiskey – 45%
This whiskey is the fifth bottle in the Gold Medal Series, a series of limited-edition releases, designed to honour the various gold medals Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey won in competitions around the world. This expression commemorates Jack Daniel's win at the 1915 World's Fair, when it was crowned "Finest Whiskey in the World."
Expect an exceptionally smooth, polished profile with gentle oak, caramelised sugar, soft fruit, and a silky mouthfeel.
4. Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select – 45%
Every bottle comes from one individual barrel, typically matured in the upper reaches of the barrel houses where temperature swings are extreme. More heat equals more interaction with oak. Expect bold vanilla, toasted oak, dark caramel, and subtle spice - each barrel slightly different, each unmistakably Jack. No batching means variation is the feature, not the flaw.
5. Jack Daniel's Single Barrel, Barrel Strength – 64.5%
Uncut & Unfiltered. This expression will be sampled side-by-side with the 45% Single Barrel.
This is Jack Daniel's straight from the barrel, bottled at natural cask strength. Still charcoal mellowed, still Tennessee whiskey, but now with serious intensity. Expect explosive oak, dark chocolate, spice, banana bread, and serious heat.
6. Jack Daniel's & Coke
The icon. The legend. The black label that launched a thousand rock bands. Old No.7 remains the backbone of the brand, approachable, reliable, and instantly recognisable. Add some coke for the world's most famous whiskey highball (or lowball) - a reminder that whiskey is meant to be enjoyed, not just analysed. Simple. Refreshing. Globally iconic. And a perfect way to end the night.

Jack Daniel's isn't just a brand, it's a case study in scaling tradition without losing identity. From charcoal mellowing to barrel-making, the distillery's obsessive control over production is why it remains relevant after more than 150 years.
