Origins, Part 3: Weller Bourbon: Wheated Whiskey Heritage, Kentucky Excellence, and the Millennium Legacy

Jan 04, 2026

When people whisper 'Kentucky bourbon' with reverence, they're often talking about legends. When they speak in hushed tones, it's usually about William Larue Weller, the benchmark for wheated bourbon.

More than just corn, wheat and oak, Weller represents innovation, personality, and a legacy that turns exceptional bourbon into modern folklore.

That legacy continues to evolve through ultra-aged and luxury expressions, from the refined elegance of Weller 18-year-old to the bold statement of Weller Millennium, marking a new era for one of bourbon's most iconic names.

William Larue Weller: The Man Who Changed Bourbon

William Larue Weller Portrait

In the 1840s, William Larue Weller broke convention by replacing rye with wheat as bourbon's secondary grain. The result was a softer, sweeter style that didn't just define his own whiskey, it reshaped the category.

Nearly two centuries later, that pioneering spirit lives on. From the barrel-strength intensity of William Larue Weller to the long-aged balance of Weller 18yo and the contemporary luxury of Weller Millennium, each release explores the full potential of wheated bourbon.

Today, Weller bourbon is distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, one of America's oldest continuously operating distilleries and part of the Sazerac portfolio.

Weller's wheated mash bill is the same foundation used for the legendary Pappy Van Winkle range, making Weller the most accessible entry point into bourbon's most coveted flavour profile.

Why Weller Bourbon Matters

William Larue Weller stands at the pinnacle of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, released annually in limited quantities and bottled uncut, unfiltered and at barrel strength.

That same uncompromising philosophy runs throughout the wider Weller range. Where William Larue Weller delivers raw power, Weller 18yo defines what extended maturation can achieve when balance and restraint take centre stage, while Weller Millennium redefines wheated bourbon through a modern ultra-premium lens

How Weller Bourbon Is Made

Mash Bill & Yeast

Every Weller expression uses a wheated mash bill, replacing rye with wheat for a softer, sweeter profile, while Buffalo Trace's proprietary yeast and sour mash process ensures consistency, depth and elegance.

Distillation & Maturation

Distilled using a combination of column and pot stills, Weller bourbon gains complexity before ageing in #4 char American oak barrels. Kentucky's climate accelerates interaction with the wood, concentrating flavour, colour and structure over time.

About Weller Millennium and Weller 18-Year-Old

In July 2025, the Buffalo Trace Distillery unveiled two ultra-premium Weller releases to mark William Larue Weller's 200th birthday: Weller Millennium Second Edition, a rare, limited blend of mature wheated bourbons, and Weller 18yo, the brand's oldest expression, a wheated whiskey exclusive to global travel retail.

Both bottlings highlight the long-term aging potential of wheat. Millennium #2, crafted from 2001, 2003 and 2006 vintages arrives in a crystal decanter with an illuminated display case showing distillation years and proportions, with a crystal "W" topper. The Weller 18yo is also presented in a crystal decanter with a crystal topper featuring the "W" stamp. Together, they showcase the depth, elegance and complexity achievable in aged wheated whiskey.

The Future of Weller Bourbon

Despite its deep heritage, Weller continues to evolve:

  • Premium innovation: Releases like Weller 18yo and Weller Millennium elevate wheated bourbon into true luxury territory.
  • Older age statements will play a bigger role, as expressions like Weller 18yo prove wheated bourbon (and wheat whiskey) can thrive with extended maturation.
  • Innovation with wheat is accelerating: Ongoing exploration of grain and ageing techniques. Expanding beyond classic wheated bourbon into wheat whiskey and blended ultra-aged components.
  • Limited editions and multi-edition "legacy" releases are likely to continue, turning Weller into a long-term collectible series rather than just a single bottle chase.
  • Global and travel-retail exclusives are becoming strategic, positioning Weller as an international luxury whiskey, not just a Kentucky cult brand.

In Closing

William Larue Weller, Weller 18yo, Weller Millennium, and all the bottlings in between, form a living timeline of wheated bourbon showcasing Weller's origins, refinement and its future.
