Not bourbon. Not rye. That’s exactly why it works.
Volume: 700ml
ABV: 43%
Origin: Kentucky, USA
Style: Sour Mash Whiskey (Toasted Barrel Finish)
Release: 2025 Limited Release
This sits outside the usual categories — and that’s where it gets interesting.
Michter’s Sour Mash doesn’t meet the rules for bourbon or rye. It lives somewhere in between, carrying elements of both — and that makes it a perfect candidate for toasted barrel finishing.
The 2025 release marks only the third time this expression has been bottled, after returning from a break since 2022 — so it’s not something that shows up often.
Like the rest of the toasted range, it starts in new charred American oak before being moved into a second barrel — toasted, not charred — built from air-dried wood to pull a completely different flavour profile.
What it delivers
This is softer, broader, and more rounded than most of the Michter’s lineup.
There’s an immediate sweetness — toffee, vanilla and honey — backed by citrus peel and milk chocolate.
As it opens, that toasted influence comes through. Gentle smoke, spice and a warm, almost campfire-like edge that builds without ever becoming heavy.
It doesn’t hit hard — it spreads.
Why it matters
This isn’t about proof or age.
It’s about:
- Process over classification
- Texture over intensity
- Balance over extremes
It also sits in a unique position:
- Limited release (not annual)
- Small batch
- One of the few American whiskies that genuinely blurs category lines
This is one of those bottles that doesn’t try to dominate the room.
It just quietly shows how different whiskey can be when you stop forcing it into a box.
