Shenk’s doesn’t try to out-muscle anything.
It plays a different game.
Part of Michter’s Legacy Series, this release sits outside the usual bourbon and rye categories — a sour mash whiskey built with a rye-forward profile and shaped heavily by wood influence.
For 2025, the focus is on toasted French oak. Not charred — toasted. That choice matters. It pulls spice, fruit and sweetness in a different direction, giving the whiskey more lift and nuance rather than weight.
What it delivers
This is all about balance and texture.
You get a soft sweetness up front — toffee, caramel and burnt sugar — layered with baking spice and dried fruit.
There’s a rye edge running through it, but it’s controlled. Not sharp, not aggressive — just enough to keep things moving.
As it opens, it leans into:
- warm spice
- toasted oak
- gentle fruit
- a slightly nutty, confectionary sweetness
It’s not trying to dominate.
It’s trying to hold together — and it does.
Why it matters
Shenk’s sits in a very specific lane:
- Not bourbon
- Not rye
- Driven by mash bill + wood interaction
- Built to explore flavour, not category
It’s also:
- Annual, but always evolving
- Non-age stated (by design)
- Released in limited quantities each year
Where it fits
If Bomberger’s is the power play — this is the detail.
More composed. More subtle. And for the right drinker, often more interesting.
This isn’t the loudest bottle in the room.
It’s the one you go back to when you actually want to understand what’s going on.
