The 2025 release from Buffalo Trace Distillery arrives at a commanding 129 proof, yet somehow drinks softer and silkier than the number suggests — one of the defining traits that’s made WLW legendary among bourbon drinkers worldwide.

Distilled across late 2010, January 2011 and January 2013, this year’s release matured for 12 years and 7 months before bottling uncut and unfiltered in Fall 2025. Built around Buffalo Trace’s wheated mash bill using soft red winter wheat, the result is a bourbon that carries enormous texture without becoming aggressive.

The nose opens with deep vanilla, maple sweetness and mature oak layered alongside worn leather and soft tobacco. On the palate, rich vanilla oils and toasted oak glide across the tongue with remarkable balance, before giving way to ripe fruit, warming spice and lingering sweetness through the finish.

Despite the proof, WLW rarely drinks hot. That wheated structure softens the edges, creating a bourbon that feels dense, oily and luxurious rather than sharp or fiery.
